The Situation
In the insurance industry, prioritizing recognition and instilling memorability are critical. Shelter Insurance® (Shelter) attributes its nearly 80-year success to exceptional marketing materials, designed to demonstrate unbeaten quality to prospective and existing clients.
Founded in 1946 and now serving 21 states, the Shelter Insurance Group of Companies has grown to provide a broad range of insurance coverages, including property and casualty, auto, home, life and other options. The company is continuously recognized for excellence: J.D. Power Award winner; ranked #10 worldwide for homeowners’ insurance; reached the Forbes’ 2024 World’s Best Insurance Companies for auto insurance; consistently ranked highly by A.M. Best, a national firm that evaluates the financial strength and operating performance of insurance providers.
A key factor in Shelter’s decades of success has been its effective, superior quality marketing materials, which facilitate engaging communications with customers. Seven operators work in the print shop, along with one lead worker and six graphic designers, who create both transactional printed materials and high-end marketing pieces for Shelter’s marketing department and agents. Transactional printing is separate from high-end printed materials, which is unusual in the insurance industry. Materials for the Records and Mailing Department and Document Services at Shelter are produced by a large in-plant production department, while the Print and Graphics Department creates eye-catching marketing collateral.
These distinct areas require different equipment and two independent processes. In early 2020, the Records and Mailing Department upgraded to inkjet production, while the Document Services and Print and Graphics Department still employed an expensive offset press and an older digital color press. The problems began to compound, from device uptime concerns to ongoing color consistency issues for branded materials between the separate printing processes. When Shelter lost its highly skilled offset press operator, it became time to explore new technology.
In 2023, knowing they needed help from a trusted long-term growth partner, Shelter contacted Konica Minolta’s Industrial Print team to solve their production process challenges.
The Solution
Konica Minolta’s product team matched Shelter’s needs with the exceptional capabilities of the AccurioJet KM-1e full-color inkjet production press. Impressed with the AccurioJet KM-1e’s substrate flexibility, 23x29.5-inch sheet size, outstanding image quality, streamlined workflow and quick turnaround times, Shelter integrated the press into its production department and completely transformed processes. Building the relationship well beyond installation as part of its White Glove Service Program, Konica Minolta’s Business Development and Workflow specialists regularly met with Shelter executives to provide detailed implementation and strategic information at each stage of the purchase process.
Prior to installing the AccurioJet KM-1e, Shelter’s maximum sheet size was limited to 14 x 20 inches. Thanks to the AccurioJet KM-1e’s expanded sheet size options, Shelter has significantly enhanced its production, improving efficiency, speed and workflows. The AccurioJet KM-1e accurately matches Shelter’s brand colors and ensures consistent color across all the materials, regardless of time, with consistently superior image quality within product specifications.
The Impact
For Shelter, the AccurioJet KM-1e has streamlined workflows, reduced expenses, ensured color consistency and unleashed new creative opportunities to distinguish their brand. Opening the door to countless new possibilities, the AccurioJet KM-1e has allowed Shelter to experiment with new media – previously inaccessible due to old device limitations – giving its staff designers more potential for creative freedom. An added benefit is that the AccurioJet KM-1e does not require pretreated paper, allowing the company to use standard offset papers and save money.
Shelter has transformed its printing process with the UV curing technology afforded by the AccurioJet KM-1e – it's faster, more efficient and adaptable to a variety of materials and applications, enhancing the quality and versatility of printed products. Instantaneous drying time allows the paper to immediately be cut, folded and scored. Unlike Shelter’s offset press, which required extensive setup, labor and netted significant paper waste, the AccurioJet KM-1e's inkjet technology drastically minimizes make-ready. Cleanup isn’t required after each job, and a reduced, once-per-week maintenance schedule saves time and reduces downtime both in the short term and over the long term.
“Shelter takes great pride in its in-plant capabilities,” said Kelli Embry, Supervisor of Document Services – Print and Graphics. “We’re not only able to meet our production demands, but frequently exceed expectations, much of which can be attributed to the outstanding performance of our AccurioJet KM-1e.” — Kelli Embry
